Ajinkyatara Fort

On the southern side of Satara (Saataaraa) city the sentinel of Maraathaa empire Ajinkya Tara (the Impregneble Star)is situated. The fort is scalable from a north side. A tar road from municipality of Satara leads us to the grand entrance (MahaaDwaara)of the fort. It is built in such a manner to protect from direct attack from cannons. On the top of this entrance tiger with four elephants clutched in each paw symbolizes the four southern empires won by the lord of Sahyaadri. Also the Garuda Maruti and Ganesha adorn the entrance. Just inside the entrance, on the bothsides there are murals of 10th century like wrestlers, milkmaids, churning for the butter, a maid with parrot.

Ajinkyatara is a fort on one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Satara in the Sahayadri Mountains of Maharashtra, India. It is a 16th Century fort and now also holds the television tower for the city of Satara. This fort has been the place where several pivotal moment in Maratha history took place.

The fort is located at Ajinkyatara Mountain, which is 3,300 feet high. As the fort is in the higher altitude, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire Satara city. There are number of water tanks inside the fort for storing water. So, there is no scarcity of water even as the fort is in the higher place

In 1708, Shahu Maharaj won Ajinkyatara, remained with the Marathas till 1818. The Ajinkyatara fort is a major historic place of Maharashtra, and was very vital as one could keep watch of the entire South Maharashtra.

This was the place where Tarabai was imprisoned by Shahu.
